Embed file summary meta data into photo files

Has anyone done something that stores file summary data inside the actual file and is it a good idea for SEO purposes mainly?
The users on the web site can upload files that are stored in a normal VPP folder. Editors should then be able to categorize or input keywords/description into the file summary. The customer wants this meta data inside the file so that it's found when a search engine finds a photo URL out of it's main context.
