Shared Files writeaccess

We have an EPiServer CMS with Admin Interface behind firewalls and a public EPiServer CMS without Admin interface outside the firewalls. Is it enough to have only Read Access and not Write Access to the Shared Files Network path from the public CMS web server? Or do all EPiServer instances need write access to Shared Files, maybe there are temporary files written to the Shared Files area?
