How To: add image load from media selection

Our Content editors requested adding support to upload media from the media selection in the content reference or url property.
in the version 6 you can select an image from the vpp and also upload new one.
this is like a backward compatibility issue.
wanted to know how can i attack this issue
i thought about adding a icon to the media selection that will open a new popup with media upload with it's default properties (only the required)
